Barbakan ( barbican ) is the tower moved in front of the fortifications line, once connected by the ‘corridor’ with the rest of the defence walls.
The present building has most of parts remaining from the end of 15th century, at that time surrounded by the deep moat, that has been encircling
the chain of fortification walls with 47 towers around the Old City.
The walls have been destroyed at the beginning of 19th century, and now only Barbican along with three medieval watchtowers remain.
The inner Barbican square is open for visitors, quite often hosts concerts of music, or ‘medieval knights tournaments’.
