The first cathedral church has been built soon after the foundation of Krakow’s bishopric in the year 1000.
The main building of the present cathedral remained its Gothic character from the end of 14th century, jet with many of later additions.

The most famous is Renaissance funeral chapel of king Sigismund The Old, who is also the founder of the famous Sigismunt Bell,
that still rings on the special moments.The place of weddings and coronations of polish Kings and Queens is also the church of Karol Wojtyła , who
celebrated his first mass there, and numerous later on, among them seven masses as the Pope John Paul II during his seven pilgrimages to Poland.

Underground crypts host the coffins of Polish Royal families, and famous people like the poet Adam Mickiewicz , and independence fighters Tadeusz Kościuszko and Józef Piłsudski.
The cathedral is still the working church, with everyday morning, and several Sunday mass services. The cathedral is open for the tourists
between 9.00-17.00 April-October and 10.00-16.00 November-March Mon.-Sat. ( Sundays from 12.00 )
