Jewish Kazimierz Tour

Walking tour through the historical streets of Jewish District, with the entrances to the synagogues and old Remu Cemetery. History of Kazimierz.

Standard Tour :
The tour starts on Szeroka street near the entrance to Stara Synagoga ( Old synagogue ) with the short explanation of Jewish history in Poland.
Stara Synagoga after the WWII has been changed into the national museum. the permanent exhibition shows both the religious and everyday’s life items used by Jews in 19th century Galicia (Kraków, Lwów).
One of the few preserved inscriptions in Hebrew is visible on mural of the house Kowea Litim Tora, near the High synagogue. The tour passes by the former Jewish secondary school, where at present is located the state high school, and follows Józefa street, where near the Nowy Sacz house of prayer father of Helena Rubinstein once run his dairy shop.
Through the courtyard at 12 Józefa street the group turns back to the Jewish Culture Centre opened in former buiding of beit hamidrash Bnei Emuna.
The round building on the square Plac Nowy once served as the place of Kosher Slaughter. The nearby wooden stands with antiques and vegetables bring back the vivid atmosphere of the Jewish market. From Plac Nowy there is a small detour to see the building of synagogue Tempel, and new opened second Culture Centre on Miodowa street.
Numerous cafes around Plac Nowy became extremely popular among Cracow’s students, who favourite ‘Alchemia’ and ‘Singer’. [Here or 15 m later on Szeroka street is the possibility to have a short break for coffe, or beer.]
Back from Plac Nowy the small streets near synagogues Izaaka and Kupa lead to Szeroka street, Kazimierz main market square before WWII.
The grave of Rabbi Moses Iserless among other Macewa tombstones from 16-17th centuries is situated on Remu Cemetery near the Remu Synagogue.
Finally, the tour goes along Szeroka street passing by building of former Mykwah, house of Helena Rubinstein and former Popper synagogue closing the full circle at the starting point near Stara Synagoga.
Notes :
Not included in the standard tour, but possible are the entrances to the synagogues : Tempel,Izaak, Wysoka ( High ) and Kupa, also the New Cemetery.
There is the possibility to see from outside : the house of Mordehai Gebirtig, former Jewish Hospital and the place, where the Jewish theatre gave the performances.

Lunch is not included, the order of visiting may change, synagogues and cemeteries are closed on Saturday, and during various ceremonies.
