Jewish Old District Kazimierz

Kazimierz - it is the name of Polish king, who in 1336 has founded the town named after himself, as a rivalry town to already existing city of Cracow.
For several hundred years existed the town with is own council, up to the beginning of the eighteen century when it finally became the part of Cracow.
In the beginning, in the town of mixed religions there were only a few jews, but with every year more were coming, they were Chech, German Ashkenazy Jews,
they were the Sephardic jews after being forced to leave Spain, they were the Russian Jews…
Kazimierz was the birthplace of Cosmetic Empress Helena Rubinstein, propheter Mosess Iserless - the founder of first Talmud school in Poland,
Nathan Sapiro - XVIIth century cabalist. Here passed by chidchood years of a film director Roman Polański, here, on the real locations Steven Spielberg made his famous movie ‘Schindlers List’.
The buildings of eight synagogues and two cemeteries escaped the IIWW destroyal , along with many minor houses of prayers.
Although not many of Jews are living in Kazimierz District ,there are the art galleries, dosens of restaurants, and old coffe shops beloved by the present intellectual ‘Boheme’ of Cracow.
