The building is one of the oldest preserved synagogues in Poland. Built probably atop of the former one bears the traces of late 15th beginning of 16th centuries.
During the WWII the synagogue has been used as a nazi warehouse. At that time the roof and the bima cage have been completely destroyed.
After the war the building has been heavily renovated, and the restaurators brought back the rennaisance look of the interior.
the permanent exhibition displays various items from Malopolska district ( Krakow area ) both religious, like the robes and crowns of torah, jadit pointers, and the items from everyday’s jewish life, mezuzah bars, teffelin and taleses for prayer, ketubah - wedding contract, wedding ring etc.
The women’s part of the synagogue is the place of temporary exhibitions, featuring historic documents and photographs, or temporary art inspired by jewish tradition.
