Work in ‘Solvay’ during Occupation

Karol joined ‘Solvay’ in middle of November 1940.

The shift started at 8 in the morning and finished at 4 PM.
Usually he walk to work, that took him about an hour.

At the beginning he worked in the quarry , where limestone rock was crushed into the pieces by dynamite.
He put those pieces onto the carts of inner train delivering limestone to the factory.

Next year he was moved to the factory, and worked with process of adding calcium to the caustic soda containers.
This was a tough job , but relatively well paid, with some food coupons, and this was a job in an important industry,
that probably saved Karol from being taken to Germany for work, or even from being taken to prison, or concentration camp.

He quit the work, when the situation became too dangerous in the last moments before the liberation of Poland.
