The exhibition is closed due to renowation work, most of the paintings are moved to Niepołomice castle on suburbs of Kraków. The reopening time: end 2009.
The chronology of display starts from the fist Polish painting schools connected with the court of last king of Poland Stanisław August Poniatowski, who’s portrait hang near the entrance. The works of the most popular painter form the 19th century Jan Matejko are represented by two huge paintings ‘Hommage of Prussian King’ ( on which you can see temporary Sukiennice building ) and Polish and American national hero after a victorous battle ‘Kościuszko pod Racławicami’.
Worth notica are also the poirtraits by Henryk rodakowski, Napoleon’s cavalry horses by Piotr Michałowski,’Neron’s torches’ by Henryk Siemiradzki, and early works of Jacek Malczewski. Among the landscapes the most spectacular painting is ‘Czwórka’ by Józef Chełmoński with four-horse cart driven into the direction of the spectator.
