Long, long time ago, during the times of Prince Krak, there was a dragon that lived in a cave beneath the Wawel Hill. Like huge number of dragons also this one was green, quite big and, unfortunately for the people living in the city, he was always hungry. Especially he liked eating young girls, in worse times he was able to eat elder women, while starving – he closed his eyes and could eat even a man. There were many volunteers coming to Krakow to fight against the dragon but nobody of them managed to kill the beast.
One sunny day young shoemaker arrived to Krakow and wanted to see the Prince himself. During the meeting the shoemaker proposed killing a sheep, filling its belly up with sulphur and giving it to the dragon. Since the beast was veeeery hungry, decided to eat the whole sheep, and immediately after started to have problems with his stomach. To kill the pain, the dragon started to drink water lying strenghtless on the bank of Vistula River and since he drank too much, he blew up. This is how the city of Krakow got rid of the dragon. The legend also says that the poor shoemaker was permitted to marry the Prince’s daughter, and after Krak’s death it was him who ruled in Krakow.
